Official Soundtrack to Live Action Science-Fiction TV Series – Based on the ‘Heavy Metal’ Comics – Available for Digital Download on February 25

Metal Hurlant Chronicles Cover

Sumthing Else Music Works will release Jesper Kyd‘s original music score from season one of METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES, the English-language science-fiction television series based on the popular comics anthology ‘Métal Hurlant,’ also known internationally as ‘Heavy Metal’ magazine. Scheduled for a digital release on February 25, the official television soundtrack composed by BAFTA award-winning and Billboard/MTV VMA nominated composer Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s CreedBorderlandsHitman) is now available for pre-order at The soundtrack will also be released on iTunes in North America and throughout Europe on February 25.

In the lineage of cult series such as The Twillight ZoneThe Outer Limits and Tales From The Crypt, METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES is the science fiction live-action adaptation of stories from the eponymous world-renowned magazine that gave birth in the United States to Heavy Metal. From 1960s cold war drama to distant future, fantasy to medieval, METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES spans a wide range of self-contained stories linked together by an asteroid, called the ‘Métal Hurlant’, which passes close to the planet where each episode’s story is taking place, thereby changing the outcome.

“I really enjoy working on multiple genres and Métal Hurlant provides a unique creative opportunity to score every episode with its own sound,” says Jesper Kyd. “Since each story takes place in a different time (future/past) and on different worlds, the music style is always different from episode to episode. The element that ties them together is the science-fiction/fantasy genre which is present in all the episodes.”

The first season of METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES (2012) stars Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner), James Marsters (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis), Michael Jai White (Spawn), Darren Shahlavi (Arrow), Scott Adkins (Zero Dark Thirty), and Kelly Brook (Smallville). The series is currently showing in 22 countries across Europe.

Danish composer Jesper Kyd started writing music for visual media in the European ‘demoscene‘. At 19 he became part owner of a video game company which later evolved into IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series and Freedom Fighters. Renowned for creating unique scores with a diverse array of live instrumentation and manipulated sounds, Kyd’s soundtracks feature a mix of styles ranging from the iconic orchestral/electronic hybrid scores for the HITMAN series (BAFTA Original Music Award) and anthemic choral score for FREEDOM FIGHTERS, to his four evocative, brand defining scores for the history inspired ASSASSIN’S CREED series (ACII voted most popular theme music by fans in Ubisoft poll) and the post-apocalyptic themes of the BORDERLANDS series.

Kyd’s credits include the faded Americana acoustic score for Microsoft’s STATE OF DECAY, the fastest selling original game on Xbox Live Arcade, and the surreal fantasy score for the action-adventure DARKSIDERS II, created by comic book writer/artist Joe Madureira, which garnered numerous critic accolades including Entertainment Weekly’s ‘Most Played Best Songs of 2012,’ Machinima’s ‘Top 5 Songs of 2012,’ ‘Best Video Game Score of 2012′ and ‘Top 10 Best Video Game Scores Ever’ from Minnesota Public Radio.

His recent projects include the uplifting orchestral album ‘LEGACY’, the acclaimed follow-up to ‘ULTIMATUM’, recorded with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and nominated for ‘Best Album’ in the Trailer Music Awards 2013. Kyd is currently scoring several next generation video games as well as season two of METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES starring Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator) and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings), scheduled for broadcast across Europe in 2014. Here at Sumthing, we love our Original Soundtracks – they’re the best, really – but they only represent a portion of the music the gaming community has to offer.  In our quest to provide our customers with the full palette of aural video gaming goodness, we knew we needed something… Sumthing ELSE.  So here it is!  Please take a gander below to see what the Sumthing ELSE section is serving up.  Happy shopping!

This section is dedicated to the dedicated – artist and fan alike.  Chiptunes are songs created strictly through the 8-bit medium… and they’re awesome.  If you thought this art form died with the NES, you are sorely mistaken.  Artists are still pumping out brand-new jams, their quills steeped firmly in nostalgia.  You thought writing music was hard?  Well, these guys code it.   Check out what they’re capable of in the Chiptunes section.

Video game composers are a ceaseless lot – the beat don’t stop when the games hit the shelves.  They’ve got so many trills and treble clefs spinning around in their heads, they’ve got music pouring out of their ears.  Luckily, Sumthing is there to catch that ish (gross.)  The Composer Collection is where you’ll find all the music from your favorite composers released outside of the games industry.  Browse the Composer Collection and check out what these guys are up to when the leash is off!

Nothing (nothing!) gets you more pumped than a good game trailer – and nothing makes a good game trailer like the right song.  A song in the Trailer Music section may not be in the game itself, but after your months of anticipation – watching and re-watching that teaser – it’s forever synonymous.  Get at it.

TRIBUTE BANDS – Coming Soon!

The Sumthing team has been to many a game music show.  The talent on display at these events would blow you away – incredible musicians putting their spin on classic game themes.  Check out some of the finest acts on the scene in the Tribute Bands section.

The Sumthing ELSE section is a work-in-progress, so please let us know if you see any glaring omissions!  And artists – if you think your music belongs in one of these niche-tastic genres, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at !!

Capcom Unity’s Brelston just released details on their two upcoming Mega Man 25th Anniversary albums!  While both albums are going to be awesome.. one is a Sumthing release, so we can give you our personally guarantee on that one!!  Brelston’s post reads as follows:

For the past several months, I’ve worked closely with the fine folks at OverClocked ReMix and Sumthing Else Music Works to prepare not one, but TWO albums devoted to the iconic Blue Bomber. Next month, a team of talented remixers will present For Everlasting Peace: 25 Years of Mega Man, while six well-known live acts will contribute their songs to Sumthing Else’s MM25: Mega Man Rocks.

Capcom 1

First, I approached OverClocked Remix with an idea – what if we could make an album that celebrated the first games in each Mega Man series? That is, top-notch remixes (in multiple musical genres) for Mega Man, Mega Man X, Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Battle Network, Mega Man Zero, Mega Man ZX and Mega Man Star Force? Naturally they more than rose to the challenge and have already begun crafting some expert-level tunes. If you’ve heard any of their tribute albums (or, say, the SFII HD Remix music) you know what to expect.

“We’re honored to again be collaborating with Capcom on another iconic franchise, paying tribute to over 25 years of Mega Man,” said OC ReMix founder and president David Lloyd, who will also contribute to the album alongside more than 20 musicians. “The music of Mega Man is as diverse as the many adventures the games take us on, providing the perfect soundtrack to a quarter century of robotic heroism and upgradeable projectile weapons. The OverClocked ReMix community is always excited to explore new interpretations and expressions of such amazing compositions, and we believe that For Everlasting Peace – our first commercial album – will offer fans something new while staying true to our goals of honoring great video game music and composers!”

Second, I worked with Sumthing Else to gather music from six hugely popular live acts in MM25: Mega Man Rocks. Headlining the album is “Built to Last,” a brand new song from The Protomen (teased during the PAX Prime concerts, ya know!); it is joined by new songs from Arm Cannon and X Hunters, as well as re-recorded hits from The Megas and Bit Brigade. Last but certainly not least, both The Protomen and Mega Ran have hand-picked some of their favorite classic jams to round out the whole package.

Both albums will launch this fall on various digital distribution sites (including iTunes).

As a massive proponent of video game music, I’m extremely proud to announce these projects and hope you all look forward to jammin’ out when they release. OC ReMix is run by some super cool, super talented folks and they’re gonna deliver an amazing album. Meanwhile, it’s great to finally work with these live acts in an official capacity, giving them a chance to introduce their biggest hits to new fans, while also allowing X-Hunters, Protomen and Arm Cannon to generate brand new material.

How you can you get involved? Welp, submit art before September 23 and you could be featured as the cover image for either album!

Be sure to sign up for the mailing list to stay updated on the MM25 release.  Read the original post from Brelston on Capcom Unity right here.
